Kaichou wa Maid-sama! Review

Kaichou wa Maid-Sama! is centered around high school student, student council president, part-time maid, karate expert, and hard worker extraordinaire, Misaki Ayuzawa, and her daily struggle between her job as student council president and keeping her job as a maid a secret. And to top it all off she is constantly finding herself emotionally confused by the, somewhat mysterious, Takumi Usui.

Now, you may be asking yourself, "Why is she working so hard to keep being a maid a secret, can't she just quit?" Well the answer is quite simple: you see, Misaki's father walked out on her mother and left them in a financial bind, so in order to help her mom pay the bills she took up a well-paying job as a maid. You may say Misaki is a bit too thoughtful, often forgetting about her own well-being in the process of helping others.

As for the student council president thing, well, as kind-hearted as she is, Misaki is a bit of a man hater, and since the school recently went from an all-boys to co-ed there are more boys than girls. The school is seen by the whole town as a school for delinquents and as such everyday is a living nightmare for the girls. But never fear! Misaki is here! She soon takes the position of student council president and begins her trek towards making the school a paradise for the girls and disciplining all the rowdy boys along the way.

Takumi Usui
Misaki Ayuzawa

Joining her on her little conquest is this guy, Takumi Usui. This anime reminds me so much of Special A (if you haven't seen it, see it I'll review it some other time). I mean you have Usui, the smooth-talking heart-throb of the entire school, and you got Misaki a hardworking feminist who is giving her all to compete with Usui all the while completely oblivious to his feelings for her.

In the anime world Usui isn't anything special. The tall, handsome, suave, smooth-talking guy with a mysterious past, fighting skills, and a natural talent at almost anything. Yea, you know the type. But believe me there isn't a shortage of Usui's, even so you can't help but like this dude! Why? Why is it that you can find him almost anywhere but you still find him so refreshing?! The short answer is I dunno. It's a mystery as to why this guy is so cool even to the harshest of critiques, but the important thing is that he's able to deliver as a male lead so it all works out in the end...I guess.

Also, because of Usui's ability to do almost seemingly impossible things on a daily basis, Misaki constantly refers to him as a "super-human alien pervert" (or something like that).

The three idiots

Yukimura Shouichirou

Hinata Shintani

I shouldn't need to say this but I will anyway...this show is hilarious!! Since the main objective of this show is to make sure Misaki's secret remains a secret, every episode is its own plot. Episodes rarely leave off from the last and the only thing you can sort of follow is the relationship between Usui and Misaki growing.

What makes this show so hilarious is the hilarious characters. The "three idiots" or "baka trio" are funny but not the funniest characters. They each have names but I won't bother with them because you will definitely see or hear them being referred to as the names mentioned.

Yukimura is a boy with female characteristics and as a result gets picked on by a lot of the boys and is even forced to cross-dress on more than one occasion. The thing I found funniest with him is a little incident with Usui (if you know what I'm talking about I'm sure you agree, if you don't know then you should watch this series).

Then you have Hinata Shintani the carefree, tree-climbing, bottomless pit that'll eat any and everything and is in love with his childhood friend, Misaki. His carefree personality is taken to the extreme. An example of this would be him describing his parent's death and being picked on in his childhood with a smile on his face and food in his mouth.

But even with these characters none can compare to the hilariousness of the ONE, THE ONLY...TAKUMI USUI!!! Even though Usui is the male lead he also doubles as a comedy relief character. He creates the tense mood then knocks it down. His general attitude towards anything that doesn't have to do with Misaki is just "F it". He doesn't value any opinions excepts for Misaki's. Two examples being: first when he rejects a girl by saying he cross-dresses as a woman, plays with dolls and is an otaku. The second would be when a guy who was hitting on Misaki asked him what his relationship was with her, and with a smile on his face he immediately replies with "I'm just a stalker" and then sparkles appear around his face as everyone stands in awkward silence...yup that's the Usui charm for ya.

I'm not even gonna get started on the maid cafĂ© and the stuff  that goes down there.

The art is awesome, background is awesome, character development is awesome, the whole anime is just awesome. I could go on for pages about this anime but I won't because if I haven't already then I might ruin the experience. Anyone who dares to call themselves a fan of anime must watch this anime. Again, I don't give ratings to anime but I do recommend them to certain audiences and normally with an anime like this I would recommend it for girls but guys'll get a kick out of it too (a bit of fanservice here and there). Kaichou wa Maid-Sama is a definite fav of mine and anyone who watches will feel the same way I'm sure.
